Chapter & Verse is a national book club for children’s literature enthusiasts in their communities who wish to discuss children’s and young adult fiction, nonfiction, picture books, and poetry.

These clubs can take place at independent bookstores or public libraries, or a meeting space of your choice. You can also hold an online-only discussion group. We have one of those, with members from all around the country.

Chapter & Verse Book Clubs

Where, when, and what we’re reading

Chapter & Verse is meeting virtually while we’re being asked to shelter (and read) at home. Please contact your chapter’s facilitator to inquire about the details for your local meeting.

Click here for a list of the books we’ve read since this book club formed in 2008. Book selections are made by the C&V leader, Nikki Silvestrini in Duluth, MN.

Wish to begin your own Chapter & Verse book club? Let us know and we’ll provide discussion questions and suggestions for your meetings.

December 2024:

Jolabokaflod

Chapter & Verse Book Clubs don’t meet in December. After long experience, we’ve learned that people are too busy to read books and meet for Book Club.

Instead, may we suggest starting a Jólabókaflóðið celebration?

Here’s a link to an NPR article explaining this book-reading and -giving tradition.

Our group of friends is celebrating its second annual Jólabókaflóðið this year. We don’t hold it on Christmas Eve, and we include people who don’t celebrate Christmas, so we generally celebrate on the Friday between Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

We draw names to exchange a book gift that we believe the other person will enjoy.

We read a short passage out loud from one of our favorite books.

And we enjoy comfort food. This year, we’re having fondue.

15 and 16 January 2025:

For this month, there are six possible picture books to read and discuss. We recommend that your group members each select one of the books and report back to the group during your January meeting. Of course, reading all six is a plus!

  • My Daddy is a Cowboy by Stephanie Seales, illus. by C.G. Esperenza
  • The Yellow Bus by Loren Long
  • Two Together by Brendan Wenzel
  • Noodles on a Bicycle by Kyo Maclear, illus. by Gracey Zhang
  • Dalmartian by Lucy Roth Cummins
  • We Are Definitely Human by X. Fang

19 and 20 February 2025:

We’re reading one fantasy novel and two wordless picture books this month.

  • Unraveller by Francis Hardinge
  • The Midnight Fair by Gideon Sterer, illus. by Mariachiara Di Giorgio (wordless)

19 and 20 March 2025:

Now that many of us have had an opportunity to read more of the ALA Award winners, we’ll discuss the books at this month’s meeting.

16 and 17 April 2025:

  • Dear Mothman by Robin Gow
  • The One Thing You’d Save by Linda Sue Park, illus. by Robert Robert Sae-Heng

14 and 15 May 2025:

  • There was a Party for Langston by Jason Reynolds, illus. by Jerome Pumphrey and Jarrett Pumphrey
  • Legacy: Women Poets of the Harlem Renaissance by Nikki Grimes, various illustrators
